| Comments: | The death toll from a pre-Christmas blizzard in much of the United States has risen to 48, with the number in western New York alone hitting 27, marking the blizzard as the region's deadliest in at least 50 years.
Roads remain impassable and almost 10,000 people are still without power 4 days after as the unrelenting storm is forecast to drop as much as a foot of additional snow, Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz said during a Monday afternoon news conference. Rescuers are struggling to free people trapped in their cars, while people stuck in shelters and nursing homes are running out of food.
The dead have been found in their cars and homes, and in snowbanks, and some perished while shovelling snow. Rescue and recovery efforts from the days-long storm continued Monday.
On Friday and Saturday, in one of the worst-hit regions in the country, the blizzard roared through western New York, stranding motorists, knocking out power and preventing emergency crews from reaching residents in frigid homes and stuck cars. |

Tropical Cyclone,Philippines: On 24 July, the combined effects of the Southwest Monsoon, enhanced by Tropical Cyclone Gaemi(local name: Carina), brought heavy to intense rains across the Philippines.Super Typhoon Gaemi (local name Carina) has been downgraded to a typhoon as it crossed Taiwan and exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on 25 July. The storm, combined with the effects of the southwest monsoon, brought heavy rainfall to the western section of Luzon, including Metro Manila. Flooding incidents have been reported in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
